How Do I Start 'Classic' in Mac OS X?

'Classic' handles your Mac OS 9 applications and is under the control of Mac OS X. It exists for backwards compatibility with applications that have not yet been ported to Mac OS X. As of this writting the 'Classic' applications which we support that have not yet been ported to OS X are Microsoft Office, Netscape, and Alpha.

'Classic' takes time to start and if you are often using 'Classic' applications you will want to have 'Classic' started automatically when you first log-in. This will speed up your 'Classic' application start-ups and improve overall reliability of 'Classic' applications.

To start 'Classic' at login:

  1. Go to the System Preferences application (under /Applications/System Preferences).
  2. Start the 'Classic' preferences application with a single-click on the 'Classic' icon.
  3. Check the check-box 'Start up Classic on login to this computer.'
  4. Close the System Preferences application on the upper left hand corner of the window by clicking on the button with the 'x' symbol.
After following these steps and you login next time the 'Classic' environment will be started automatically.
