Enabling downloads using FTP applications and Internet Explorer
Because our department network is behind a firewall, you may encounter problems
downloading files from outside our local network using FTP applications or Internet
Explorer. To allow FTP access and downloads through the firewall, you must change your
OS X network settings to use "FTP Passive Mode" for each type of internet connection
you have (ethernet, modem etc.) and check that your FTP application is using this
mode also. These changes can only be made if you have administrative access to your computer.
Change your network settings in OS X for each type of internet connection:
Open System Preferences by selecting it from the Apple menu
or your dock
Select Network
Select the Proxies tab
Select a connection type from the Show: menu (e.g. Built-in
Ethernet)
Note: do not select Active Network Ports
Click on Use Passive FTP Mode (PASV)
Do the last 2 steps for each type of connection listed in the Show:
menu
Click on the Apply Now button
Check that Fetch (our default FTP application) is using passive mode:
Open Fetch
If a New Connection window opens, click Cancel
Select Customize -> Preferences from the Fetch menu
Select the Firewall tab
Click on Use passive mode transfers (PASV) if the box is not
already checked
