Open the "Finder" application by either clicking on its icon on the
Dock, or from the Menu Bar at top of the screen.
Under the "File" menu, choose "Find...".
On the window that appears next:
If you are searching for a personal document, change the "Search
In:" target to "Home".
Otherwise, choose "Everywhere"* to do a more extended search.
If you happen to know part of the file you are looking for, enter
it in the box opposite to "file name contains". If you know the
exact name of the file, you can change this option to "file name is",
to perform the serach.
For files that may contain characters, like word processing, spreadsheets,
etc., you may also enter a string of characters in the "contents include"**
box to perform a search on.
You can also serach for documents based on the creation or modification
date, kind, size, or extension.
To do this, click on the "Add criteria..." control, and choose the
appropriate filed from the drop -down list.
* Choosing this option will elongate the search time.
** Including a file name that you are not certain of, together with a string of
characters that do not exactly match inside the file you are looking for, will
lead into poor search results. It is recommended to not leave eitehr of these
fields blank, if you are not sure about both.
